Marketing a Music Artist: Olly Murs

I decided to see how the artist Olly Murs was marketed in different ways to accumulate supporters and become successful. Through only one year, he has become very successful having appeared on the X Factor competition, accumulated a fan legion and has signed to his own record label, Syco Records owned by Sony Music Entertainment.

The X Factor:
Having recenlty left the X Factor competition and coming second place, he has gained a large fan base through the public recognition that he has gained. He has gained publicity through fan sites such as joining his fan group on Facebook. While on the program he has also collaborated with real music artists that are very popular which was Robbie Williams who is a very successful musician and already has a large fan base of fans. Therefore, this may result in a future collaboration with Robbie Williams at large venues such as at the O2 Arena or a flow of Williams fans supporting Murs, either way, he will gain recognition.

He has since then been part of the X Factor live tour with the other contestants, released a debut album, with his hit song "Please dont let me go" which reached number one on the Top 40 charts in the UK.

The X factor tour:
The X Factor tour has also promoted him to a large mass of fans with the other X Factor contestants. This will enable him to target people that are fans of the show who have turned up to the concert, which will then result in Olly Murs gaining more public recognition to people who are not fans already. This allows him to show his true musical talents as a means of marketing him for merchandise in the future.

Record company:

Murs is signed to record labels, Syco Music and Epic Records who are owned by Sony Music Entertainment. They have helped him gain popularity such as linking him to TV programmes. Since his single "Please don't let me go" was released, Olly Mur's has achieved airplay on large radio stations such as Capital Radio Station which contributes the latest music to a mass audience. He has also appeared on the music channel MTV since his success of his album which has resulted in more recognition to people.

He has also set up his own fansite to lure in fans on information about his latest work, photo's and competitions. He has also got fan groups social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter where he talks to viewers and gets them to download his new singles for example. He has also contributed to television programs such as "Soccer Aid" in order to gain popularity and has involvement in the Red Nose Day "Desert Trek".

Evaluation:

Conclusively, Olly Murs has successfully gained many fans through his simple appearance of going on the X Factor competition. Since then, he has gained inumerable fans through the different strategies implemented from the change in his image to his fan site. This is down to the contribution of technology such as social sites, radio and television, which could not make his recognition as big as it is currently. I will use these different methods of my own artist in my project to successfully promote my artist to the public.
