Affect of technology on the music industry:

It is clear that technology has largely affected the music industry over the recent years. This has effected the music industry in terms of artists breaking into the industry via the internet. The internet has played a large part in making artists well known through social networks such as MySpace.

An example of a band breaking into the music industry is the indie band, the Arctic Monkeys. in 2005, The Arctic Monkeys released their first single, Fake Tales of San Francisco. The artist came to the worlds attention in 2006 after their large success of social network sites in promoting their music and marketing themselves via MySpace. They soon signed to "Domino Records" in 2006. However, it took all this time to get the band to not be an independent artist. This has therefore changed the way that bands market themselves in the industry, as artists would have their record label, whereas the Arctic Monkeys did not find being a part of a record label appealing -

"Before the hysteria started, the labels would say, 'I like you, but I'm not sure about this bit, and that song could do with this changing...' We never listened."

Similarly other artists have also used this method of using social sites to break into the industry such as Kate Nash. In 2005, after a number of gigs she had done, she uploaded her music to MySpace. She also hired a manager for herself, which saw her allow her debut single "Carolines Victim" where 1000 copies were released which sold out.

After this, she signed to Polydor's, Fiction Records where her second single "Foundations" was released in 2007. She has been named Best Female Artist at the 2008 BRIT awards and has a platinum selling of her album "Made of Bricks".

Nowadays, artists use the internet in order to promote themselves, with the use of social sites "Facebook", "Twitter" and "MySpace" to allow their fans to have the latest news of their music. Many artists also have their own website in order to market themselves:
